Why Are My Received Outlook Attachments Read Only

Hello Kimberlea,
Protected view is separate from read-just.

Are you trying to edit the certificate and save it dorsum to the e-mail or just make it easier to edit and save the document?

Disabling protected view was i of the remedies I institute online to the files opening in read-only.

I need to be able to open the document in an editable format, edit information technology, save it to my drives, so perform other functions with it. I'm almost never editing then sending back to the original sender, though I do often have to electronic mail the certificate once I've edited it.

If there is no way to stop the files from opening in read-just, I need to consistently have the "enable editing" role bachelor to me, which information technology has not been.

The option to Enable editing is shown when the document opens in Protected view.

However, e-post attachments that you lot open straight from Outlook volition be read-only, regardless of settings for Protected view.

If the choice to enable editing appeared every time the document opened in protected view, I would not be request how to ensure it appears, unfortunately.

Then if protected view is not a factor in my documents opening as read just, what is? How do I go far stop? Volition I forever have to create new documents with the content of an zipper in guild to be able to edit and relieve my edits?

Protected view would display a yellowish bar with the option to enable editing (run into screen shot below). If yous turned off the options referring to Protected view (in Trust Middle), that view is not the issue hither.

An e-mail zipper will be downloaded to a temporary folder and open as read-only. You can resave it by pressing F12 which brings up the Relieve As dialog box. (Depending on your keyboard, you may have to press FN+F12 rather than but F12.)

Annotation that if Word opens east-postal service attachments in Read Fashion, you tin prevent that from happening by clearing the option "Open up due east-mail attachments and other uneditable files in reading view" at File | Options | General. Read Mode (sometimes referred to as Reading Layout view) is different from read-only (come across Diane'south reply).

Read Mode displays a simplified view with but three ribbon tabs:

The pick to open files in reading view is not checked, and then the default should exist layout. Only in case I was reading that incorrect somehow, I checked the box for reading view and the event is the same. And as I've said in a higher place at least once, the "enable editing" box does not always appear when I open an attachment that is "read-but." Before I came online and asked this question officially I tried a number of the solutions offered, including all of the ones that have been mentioned in this thread and several others. I just want to open files and then that I can edit them without having to accept five extra steps. Is there a fashion to do this, or has a Microsoft "update" again simply created work for me?

OK, so further to my attachments opening from Outlook into Word every bit "read only," at present my own files are opening in "read only," that is, I'm working in Discussion, I become to a Word file that I've saved, and a completely new Word boots up, and the file is marked "read-only," when I've done cipher to protect it. Now I can't edit my ain files without creating a new ane - unless the "enable editing" button comes up, equally it does only erratically. What is this nonsense and how do I make information technology end?

If you are seeing "(read-only)" on the title bar for all documents, and then the trouble could exist with Windows folder permissions.
